Major fire at knitwear factory
Updated: 2016-02-14-23:59
A major fire broke out at a knitwear factory in Beantpura on Chandigarh Road on Sunday morning.
No one was injured in the incident, even as goods worth crores of rupees were gutted.
As the flames engulfed the building around 4.30am, a neighbour noticed smoke billowing out of it and called up the fire department. The blaze soon spread panic in the area, with the factory situated near a petrol pump.
An area resident, Harinder Singh, said, “We were overcome by a sudden fear as the unit is near a petrol pump. Besides, drums of diesel were kept inside the factory.”
As many as 15 fire tenders, which made 70 to 80 rounds, were pressed into service.
Fire safety officer Rajinder Sharma said, “We had to break down the walls to enter the factory premises. After much effort, firemen brought the diesel drums out. We are yet to ascertain what caused the blaze.” The fire department took over 10 hours to bring it under control.
