ALOR SETAR, Feb 26 (Bernama) — The operation to put out a forest fire in Gunung Pulai, Baling, which has been burning since Tuesday, continues this morning on the remaining two-hectare area of the affected forest.
Fire and Rescue Department public relations officer, Supt Nur Hafizah Muhammad Lukman said 64 firemen and 34 individuals comprising mountain guides, as well as Forestry Department and Civil Defence Department personnel were involved in the operation today.
Among the assets used were a Fire Jet Shooter, Ziegler pump, as well as the GP1010 and 1210 pumps to extract water from open sources and an Agusta helicopter for aerial monitoring.
“The total area of the forest affected by the fire is 16.2 hectares, but as at yesterday, we have put out the fire in 14.2 hectares of the area,” he said in a statement Friday.
A Bombardier CL415MP aircraft belonging to the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) was also mobilised to help water bomb the raging forest fire yesterday.
Yesterday, the aircraft released 18,000 litres of water over a period of three hours on the three-sq km burning site.
The blaze was believed to have started at 7.43 am on Tuesday, from a fire which was not completely extinguished by a mountain climber after cooking food.
