Property worth several lakhs destroyed in fire

KANPUR: Property and valuables worth several lakhs were reduced to ashes when a major fire broke out in a transport company in Babupurwa area of the city in the afternoon hours of Friday.
According to a fire department official, the premises, belonging to New Malik Transport company, in Babupurwa was gutted when a huge consignment of goods that was to be transported, caught fire. The incident was reported around 1.30 pm and the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, police said.
The officer said the owner of the transport company lives in the city and the office was managed by the employees.
Locals said the fire brigade arrived in 30 minutes.
“Initially, we tried to douse the flames, but irreparable damage had already been done by the time the fire officials arrived,” said Kaleem a local of Babupurwa.
“Nearly five fire tenders were pressed into service and it took firemen nearly couple of hours to douse the flames,” said Shiv Darash, a senior fire station official.
Police however have ruled out any foul play in the incident.
