Truck carrying cattle set on fire, Dadri village tense
Updated: 2016-02-25-09:22

Tension gripped Bodaki village of Greater Noida’s Dadri region on Wednesday morning after local residents seized a truck full of cattle, allegedly meant for slaughter, and set it on fire. Heavy police force has been deployed in the area as a precautionary measure.

Around 5.30am some residents spotted the truck near the village’s railway crossing. The truck was fully packed, which raised suspicion among the locals. When some of them peeped in, they saw 11 cows. As the news spread, a mob gathered near the truck and set free the cattle, and set it on fire. However, four cows were recovered by police.

“Locals informed us about the truck in the morning. When a police team reached the spot, seven cows were already released by the villagers and the police managed to recover only four cows. The cows were unconscious and were treated by vets, before they were shifted to gaushala (cow shed),” DSP Anurag Singh said.

Police said they have lodged an FIR in the case under the Prevention of Cow Slaughter Act and launched a manhunt to nab the accused. “We have lodged the case on our own as no villagers came forward to file a complaint,” Singh said.

According to cops, the registration number of the Tata-407 mini-truck – HR55S 7438 – was found to be fake. “We have checked with the transport department officials. They said another truck is registered on this number. The owner of that truck is Bheem Singhal from Gurgaon,” he added. The haltman of Bodaki railway crossing, Udaiveer, told TOI the criminals were transporting 11 cows on the truck. “On hearing the police hooter, they abandoned the truck and fled,” he said. Reportedly, cops were conducting raids in the village in connection with another case.
