Man burnt in Uttara fire dies after two sons

The man burnt along with his wife and three sons in a fire at their home in Dhaka’s Uttara has died. The death takes the casualties in the incident to three.
His wife is still in critical condition at the burns unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Resident physician Partha Shankar Paul told bdnews24.com that Md Shahnewaz succumbed to his injuries at around 6pm on Saturday, a day after the incident.
He suffered 95 percent burns on his body while and his wife Sumaiya Akter has burns on 90 percent of her body.
Two of their three burnt children—Shahalin Bin Shahnewaz, 15, and Jayan Bin Shahnewaz, 18 months —died on Friday.
The other son Jarif, 11, who suffered minor burns, was declared out of danger.
The five were burnt in the fire, which originated at around 7am on Friday.
It started from a gas burner in the kitchen of the family’s flat on the top floor of a six-storey building at Uttara Sector-13.
Fire Service officials suspect a gas leak, either from the stove or the pipe, to have been the cause of the accident.
Hailing from Brahmanbarhia, Shahnewaz worked as a maintenance engineer at the US embassy in Dhaka. He moved to the Uttara apartment with his family only a few days ago, on Feb 20.
Shahnewaz’s sister Armin Nishat alleged the family had smelt gas when they moved to the flat.
They had informed the landlord but he had paid no heed.
Shahnewaz’s brother Kamrul Hasan filed a case over unnatural deaths with Uttara police on Friday night.
OC Ali Hossain suggested that citizens check gas and power lines while moving to a new house.
