A major fire broke out in a high-rise at Mumbai’s Bhulabhai Desai Road on Saturday evening.

Over a dozen persons who were stranded on the top floors had to be rushed to the terrace of the building. They were later brought down through the staircase when the fire was comparatively brought under control. Two senior citizens complained of breathlessness but were immediately given first aid by the fire brigade ambulance on the spot of the incident.

On Saturday afternoon at 3.25 pm, the Mumbai fire brigade received a call about a fire at Tirupati building near the iconic Mahalaxmi temple. The building which is over four decades old is majorly residential but has a few commercial shops as well on the front side of the building. The fire broke out on the fourth floor flat No 401 in B wing of the building. There were two women along with two kids and a house help at the time of the fire. One of the women on noticing the fire rushed outside the flat along with the other members.

The Chief Fire officer (CFO) P. S. Rahangdale said that the flat has an area of around 2200 sq feet. “The fire was confined to the electric wiring, household articles, split air conditioner and some kitchen articles as well. One person suffered breathing problems due to smoke. However, he was treated in the ambulance at the spot.”

One of the residents in the building, Vinay Dhadda who lived on the fifth floor of the same building, said, “I was not at home at the time of the incident. However, my wife and house help heard people screaming that there was a fire and immediately rushed down.”
