Timely action by the fire and rescue personnel averted a major tragedy at the St. Joseph’s College in the city in the early hours of Sunday.
As it was a Sunday, there was less people on the campus. Around 7 am, the college staff noticed smoke emanating from the store room close to the boys hostel in the college. The store room is in an old building with broken furniture and waste material.
Seven fire and rescue personnel rushed with a fire tender to the college and extinguished the fire.
“Getting the information on time and early intervention ensured that the fire could be contained quickly,” said R Vivekananda, one of the fire and rescue personnel.
“Since the room was filled with old furniture and other waste material, the fire was spreading quickly. Any further delay could have caused the fire to spread to other areas,” he said.
Principal of the college Andrew Francis said it was a minor accident. He said the fire could have been caused by a short circuit as the store room structure was old.
