Altogether over a dozen fire tenders, including from Air Force, Parachute, Defence, Ordnance Factory, besides from bordering Unnao district were roped in to fight the blaze, which had the possibility of spreading to nearby areas.
As per the sources, fire broke out at two transport company godowns resulting in loss of several crores of rupees. The companies are identified as New Malik and Malik Transport.
At present, more than a dozen fire tenders are still fighting hard to douse the fire. With no reports of casualties or injuries, official are yet to ascertain the exact cause of the fire. However, spark in over-head high tension wires at the New Malik Transport company is suspected to be the reason, where a huge consignment of goods including combustible material was kept that caught fire resulting in such a major mishap.
The officer said that the owners of the Transport companies, Subhash Malik and Chetan Malik live in city and office is managed by the employees.
Locals said the fire brigade arrived in 30 minutes. “Initially, we tried to douse the flames, but irreparable damage had already been done by the time the fire officials arrived,” said Kaleem a local of Babupurwa.
“We didn’t knew how to react. On one hand, we had the consignment of goods inside the godown waiting to be loaded into trucks, and on the other, we had to think of saving our lives. Later, we rang the fire control room,” said an employee at the godown. The godowns had consignment of plastic related goods, rubber tyres, steel items, clothes and medicines (liquid) that were to be sent to different parts of the country. All the goods were burnt in the fire.
Chief Fire Officer said that the investigations are on. “There were huge consignment of goods piled up in godown, so the cause of the fire cannot be ascertained immediately. Only after thorough investigation we would be able to reach on any conclusion,” he said.
“We are keeping an eye and several fire tenders are still stationed on the transport companies premises to deal with any recurrence of fire,” a fire brigade official told TOI.
The fire resulted in chaos in Transport nagar area of Babupurwa as thick smoke could be seen even as far as two kilometre away from the mishap site. Shortage of water for dousing the flames also affected fire-fighting as the firemen had to collect water from local prominent City Mall.
