Three injured in fire accident due to leaky LPG cylinder in Madurai

Three people, including a woman and her son sustained burn injuries after a fire broke out due to a LPG cylinder leak here on Monday. The incident took place during the replacement of a cylinder. As the regulator was not fixed properly on the new cylinder, the leaked gas caught fire, resulting in the accident.
The injured were identified as Kalaivani, 34, wife of Chandran, her son Mithun Roshan, 8, and neighbour Selvam, 50. The injured were treated in Usilampatti government hospital and shifted to the Government Rajaji Hospital for tertiary care. Police sources said that Kalaivani and Mithun sustained grievous injuries, while Selvam escaped with minor injuries.
The incident took place in Chandran’s house situated in Bose Rowther street in Usilampatti. Chandran, working as supervisor in a Tasmac shop in the same area, was not at home when the incident took place.
Police sources said Kalaivani was preparing morning breakfast when the cylinder got over. So, she sought her neighbour Selvam’s help to fix the new one. He removed the regulator from the empty cylinder but apparently did not fix it properly on the new one resulting in the gas leak. Unaware of this, Kalaivani, lighted the burner to check if the regulator was fixed properly, but the leaking gas caught fire. It resulted in injuries to all the three in the kitchen.
People from the neighbourhood rushed to the house and doused the fire. Usilampatti town police registered a case and conducted investigations.
