Fire at Turbhe dumping ground put out in 2 hrs
Updated: 2016-03-02-00:41
A major fire in the municipal dumping ground at Turbhe, which started late Monday night, was quickly extinguished by Navi Mumbai fire brigade within two hours. The cooling operations lasted almost till 7 am on Tuesday, creating thick smoke in the locality, which is dotted by various slum colonies and the railway station.
This is the first major fire at the 10-year-old dumping ground, since the incident at Mumbai’s Deonar dumping ground. Just last month, NMMC officials had stated that a lot of precautions are taken at the Turbhe dumping ground, which is “scientifically managed”.
City-based RTI activist Anarjit Chauhan said, “A fire broke out despite assurances by NMMC. I think a serious study has to be undertaken.”
