Bacolod fire; 2 injured, 153 houses razed
Updated: 2016-03-02-00:00

Two persons, including a minor, were injured after a fire razed at least 153 houses and left more than P700,000 worth of damage in property at Purok Riverside Zone 3 of Barangay Banago in Bacolod City yesterday.

Superintendent Rodolfo Denaga, city fire marshal, identified the victims as Evangeline Libre, 55, who sustained minor burns, and a 15-year-old boy who had lacerated wounds.

As of 5 p.m., 134 houses were totally damaged while 19 others were partially damaged by the blaze that broke out at 8:15 a.m. and lasted for more than two hours.

Denaga said the fire originated from the house of Lemuel Nobleza, however, they are still determining the cause.

He said firefighters had a hard time getting into the area due to the narrow road, and they were forced to dig a hole first on the cemented wall of a residential subdivision to get through.

Firetrucks from neighboring local government units, including the cities of Talisay, Silay, Bago and Victorias, and E.B. Magalona town also responded.

Firefighters from Amity Volunteer Fire Brigade and Bacolod Chamber Volunteer Fire Brigade also augmented the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) personnel.

The fire victims are now staying at the gym of the nearby Domingo Lacson National High School. The city government through the Department of Social Services and Development is now assisting the affected families.

The fire broke out just as the BFP-Bacolod was holding a program to kick off its campaign for Fire Prevention Month this March.
