Updated: 2016-03-08-23:19
A fire in an unattended scrap and garbage dump at Kharegaon was reported Tuesday evening. Luckily, the disaster management team and fire brigade reached spot within minutes and managed to douse the fire before it could cause further damage.
The blaze was reported around 5:30pm on Tuesday in the unattended dump, mostly scrap material, adjoining an isolated spot near near Kharegaon toll naka. Within minutes, the entire area was enveloped in dense smoke creating panic among residents who feared another Deonar in the making here in the suburbs.
The fire officials rushed to the spot along with three fire engines, one water tanker and doused the blaze. The team managed to control the blaze by 7pm but a standby vehicle was stationed at the spot to control any further outbreak. The last fire tender left the spot around 10pm.
“We are investigating the cause of fire at the yard. As all the material was brunt to ashes, it will take some time to analyze the situation. No causality or injury was reported due to the incident,” informed Arvind Mandke, chief fire officer at TMC.
The incident of dumped scrap lying unattended and catching fire suddenly has once again raised the issue of proper disposal of waste in the city. Some miscreants had dumped chemicals at a yard in Diva recently that led to a chemical reaction and caused dense smoke to envelope the suburb.
Activists have been long demanding a proper dumping facility in the city and also approached the court regarding the same. “The city shouldn’t witness another Deonar and the administration must take timely steps to avoid a repeat of what happened there,” said Apeska Dexit, a resident of Kalwa.
