Updated: 2016-03-13-23:11

A major fire that engulfed Sarjan Apartment on VIP Road in the city on Sunday caused massive damage to its structure. Water, electricity, telephone and internet lines suffered massive damage in the fire that started from the waste material duct on the ground floor of the apartment. However, there were no casualties due to the mishap.

Residents of neighbouring apartment informed those living in Sarjan Apartment at 3 am about the fire in the waste material duct which later spread upward to the top floor. People tried to get out of their flats but black smoke had blocked the passages on every floor of the building. Residents somehow managed to get out of the building, sources said.

Haresh Pandya, who lives in B tower of the apartment, said, “Initially, we could not get out of our flats. However, we forced our way out of the thick blanket of smoke.” Fire brigade and police reached the spot soon and switched off the power supply in the building.

Vijaykant Tiwari, fire officer, said, “The terrace door was firmly closed. Once we opened up that door, smoke slowly went out making it clear for people to take the staircase and go down. There is damage to the structure at many places and cracks have surfaced. The fire might have started after someone threw a lighted cigarette or bedi in the duct that had dry waste. It took us one hour to extinguish it.”
