It took 20 hrs to control Aminabad market fire
Updated: 2016-03-14-01:07

It took 20 hours to control the fire that began in congested Mumtaz Market in Aminabad on Saturday night.

The fire, which erupted around 10pm on Saturday, was totally put out at 7pm on Sunday. While exact losses were yet to be estimated, preliminary reports suggest that items stocked in four dozen shops have been damaged.

The fire control operation turned out to be extremely difficult due to the narrow approach into the market and lack of ventilation. Apart from those affected by the fire, many shopkeepers were ruing the losses they sustained due to the release of gallons of water.
By the wee hours of Saturday, the complete fleet of 24 fire tenders available in Lucknow district was summoned.

Fire tenders had to be called from Unnao, Rae Bareli and private establishments. Loose wiring or short circuit was believed to have sparked the fire.

Many stores stock plastic toys and the smoke generated by molten plastic released toxic gases which hampered fire-fighting. Meanwhile, shopkeepers claimed that flames had been suppressed by 3am but took a violent shape again after 20 minutes. “The fire department and policemen thought flames had been doused and had left the operation,” said Mohammad Riyaz.
