Updated: 2016-03-15-01:22
Clashes between Hizb-ut Tawhid and villagers at Noakhali’s Shonaimurhi Upazila have left two dead.
Clashes between the two groups erupted at 11am on Monday at Chashirhaat Bazar and Porkora village. Furious locals vandalised the Hizb-ut Tawhid office at the bazaar. They also set two houses on fire.
Acting UNO of Shonaimurhi Nikaruz Zaman confirmed the news of the deaths.
Those dead have been named as Hizb-ut Tawhid activists Ibrahim Khan Rubel, 32, and Solaiman Khokan, 28.
A member of the local Union Parishad said a villager was shot dead in the clash, but police could not confirm the information.
At least 110 Hizb-ut Tawhid followers, including women and children, were injured in the clashes.
Police fired tear gas shells and rubber bullets to bring the situation under control. At least 50 police personnel were also injured in the violence.
The Noakhali police superintendent said villagers of Porkora had an ongoing feud with the Hizb-ut Tawhid for the last few years.
“The villagers accused the activists of the organisation of conducting several anti-Islamic activities in the area,” he said.
Additional police forces, BGB and RAB have been deployed in the area to control the situation.
