Fire has devastated a Magwe Region village, destroying more than 90 percent of homes and leaving 738 people homeless.

The fire broke out in Nyaung Pin Thar village in Magwe township at about 1pm yesterday, gutting 182 of the village’s 200 homes. Magwe Region Fire Services Department attributed the fire to hot ash that had been placed in a hut for cows, and said lack of water and poor access had hampered efforts to save homes.

Helped by the dry and hot conditions, the fire quickly engulfed the hut and tore through the village, fire officials said.

“It all happened so fast,” one person who lost their home told The Myanmar Times yesterday. “The fire spread from one house to another because of the water shortage.”

The village is about 18 kilometres (11 miles) northeast of Magwe, about 1.6km (1 mile) from the Magwe-Yenangyaung road. Narrow roads in the area made it difficult for fire trucks to gain access, firefighters said yesterday.

Police have opened a case against Daw Mar Win, 65, who allegedly placed the ashes inside the cow hut.
