Man admits throwing TVs into river, setting house on fire
Updated: 2016-03-18

A 27-YEAR-OLD man yesterday admitted to causing damage and setting fire to a house.

Mohammad Shahrin bin Awang Zaini, who will be sentenced on Monday, faces five years’ jail and two strokes of the cane for mischief by causing damage, and 15 years’ jail and six strokes for mischief by causing fire.

At 7.30am on March 15, at their house in Kampong Ayer, Mohammad Shahrin complained to his mother that someone had tampered with his mobile phone the previous day.

He also accused a neighbour of spying on him through the house window.

When his mother said she was not unaware of these, Mohammad Shahrin suddenly started destroying things in the house.

He smashed a mirror in the living room, broke a wooden wall and threw two TV sets into the river outside the house.

Mohammad Shahrin then took his mother’s clothes, some old newspapers and a mattress, placed them on a sofa in the living room and set them on fire.

A neighbour rushed to douse the fire and calm Mohammad Shahrin down after the mother cried for help.

The Intermediate Court Judge was Haji Abdullah Soefri bin Pehin Dato Haji Abidin, while the DPP was Danial Kifrawi.
