Low-floor bus catches fire, passengers safe

A low-floor bus caught fire Near Board Office on Link Road number 1 in capital on Saturday evening, triggering panic in the area.

There were 35 passengers, including women and children on the bus at the time of incident. Luckily, they managed to run out of the bus barely a minute before the bus was charred.

The incident took place around 8.15 pm when the bus, plying on TR 1 route, was going to Aakriti Ecocity from Bairagarh, police said. Bus driver Irfan Ali spotted sparks flying in front side of bus Near VYAPAM Square. Three fire tenders reached the spot after 10 minutes and put the the fire. But by that time, the bus suffered extensive damage.

Displaying presence of mind, Ali quickly moved the bus from the square and pulled it over to road side. Before the driver and conductor Prakash Kumar could understand anything, the bus went up in flames.

Realising the situation, the duo asked the passengers to rush out and opened emergency and exit gates. Upon learning about the incident, cops from nearby MP Nagar police station rushed to the spot.

To ensure that no passenger is left behind, a cop hopped on the bus and checked it due to which he sustained minor burns.

How the bus caught fire is a matter of investigation, cops said.
