Infant killed as hut catches fire
Updated: 2016-03-23-09:51

A six-month-old girl died and four of her family members sustained burn injuries as their home caught fire in the wee hours of Tuesday. The deceased has been identified as Yenima. Her parents Janga Chandrapaul and Rajani runs a roadside eatery at the thatched house in BK Palem village that falls under Kakumanu mandal of Guntur district.

According to police sources, some of Chandrapal’s close relatives arrived on Monday night to attend a wedding at Guntur. They alongwith the house owner’s family were fast asleep when sparks flew from the refrigerator. Within a matter of minutes, the entire house turned a fire trap. All the persons inside rushed out but by then the infant was badly burnt. Neighbours brought her and the other injured to the government hospital here. However, the baby girl succumbed to her injuries.

Kakumanu sub inspector Lokeswara Rao inspected the house on Tuesday morning. “Preliminary enquiries indicate that short circuit led to the mishap. We are yet to ascertain how the fire spread so quickly from the refrigerator. Investigation is on,” the SI told reporters.

The victims, who are undergoing treatment at GGH, are in critical condition.

“Since three of them received more than 30 per cent burns on the face and neck, it is a tough task to bring them to normal. They need to be put under observation for at least two days,” GGH superintendent Raja Naidu said.
