Updated: 2016-03-24-08:43
A major fire in an industrial oil shop at Pandesara GIDC spread to another shop and turned 5,000 saris there, besides two tempos and a car parked in the vicinity into ashes here on Wednesday.
There were no causalities in the fire caused by a short circuit at the shop of Girjapati Enterprise Limited located in plot no 133 of Pandesara GIDC at 6.40am. Jignesh Rawal used his shop as godown and had stored 20 drums of solvent and chemical oil there.
“The fire probably started after a high tension electric wire snapped triggering short circuit in the shop. The fire became intense in no time because of the drums with chemicals in the shop,” said SK Acharya, chief fire officer (CFO), Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC).
Fire Brigade was at the spot with 14 vehicles and 60 men. However, by the time they reached there, the fire had engulfed Sagar Embroidery, a shop belonging to Balkrishna Khemka. At least 5,000 saris stored there got gutted in the fire which also destroyed two tempos and a car parked outside.
Acharya said, “The shop owners didn’t have any fire-fighting equipment. They will be issued notices soon. We controlled the fire within 120 minutes.”
