Fire destroys 16 shelters in northern refugee camp
Updated: 2016-03-27-10:24
A fire broke out at a Karen refugee camp at Ban Mae La Un in Sop Moei district of this northern border province, destroying 16 makeshift shelters early Saturday night. Nobody was hurt, Siamrath Online reported.
Pipat Ekpaphan, the provincial governor, was quoted as saying that the fire started from a cooking stove at a shelter on the 8th block of the refugee camp.
Soldiers from the Sop Moei-based 36th Rangers Regiment and refugees in the camp were able to bring the fire under control and put it out after a battle of almost two hours.
The fire destroyed three shelters for refugees, an office of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), 11 shelters for volunteer rangers, and one shelter for the camp’s security unit.
Fire are not uncommon at border refugee camps in this province, with some causing a lot of casualties. Most of the fires are caused by carelessness. The shelters are made of bamboo, which burns rapidly when a fire breaks out.
