KOTA KINABALU, March 31 (Bernama) — The Sabah Fire and Rescue Department (JBP) received 43 cases of bush and forest fires yesterday which resulted in haze affecting several areas in the state.
Sabah JBP director Nordin Pauzi said such fires were reported in three areas in Kota Kinabalu, Papar (8), Penampang (6), Jalan Lintas (4), Tuaran (5), Kota Belud (3), Kudat (2) and two areas in Beaufort.
“Fires were also spotted in four areas in Tenom, three in Keningau, and one each in Kuala Penyu, Sandakan and Kinabatangan.
“The biggest fire reported yesterday was in Bukit Cinta Mata Amboi 2, Tenom involving about 40 acres of forest razed,” he said when contacted by Bernama here today.
As a result of the forest and bush fires, Bernama found several areas in Sabah including Kota Kinabalu, Tuaran, Keningau and Kuala Penyu were affected by haze since yesterday.
Meanwhile State Education deputy director Maimunah Suhaibul said no schools were closed in Sabah so far.
However, she said the department was monitoring the situation including obtaining the advice of the state Environment Department (DOE) and Health Department.
“We have been informed the haze situation in Kuala Penyu worsened today but it has not reach hazardous level.
“We will also be in contact with DOE and the Health Department on the measures to be taken under all conditions of haze,” she told Bernama when contacted here today.
IN PAITAN, the Beluran parliamentary constituency office sent 1,000 boxes of drinking water to drought-hit residents in 10 villages in Tangkarason here today.
Beluran UMNO Youth chief Samad Jambri, who headed the delivery of mineral water, said the effort was directed by Beluran Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Ronald Kiandee after being alerted by several Village Security and Development Village Committee (JKKK) chairmen in Tangkarason on water supply woes due to the drought.
“We quickly sent mineral water to 10 affected villages while the Paitan mini district office and agencies under the District Natural Disaster Committee will also be assisting the affected villages,” said Samad, who is also Beluran MP private secretary, when met in Kampung Pinangkau, near here.
The villages were Maidan, Golong, Kaindangan, Pinangkau, Tangkarason, Musinggapuh, Bawang, Sungai Tangkarson, Panobukon and Pinampadan.
