KUALA LUMPUR, April 5 (Bernama) — Eight people were injured when two explosions occurred in two restaurants in Mid Valley shopping mall here, Tuesday during a re-instatement work on liquefied petroleum gas system after maintenance works.

City Fire and Rescue Department assistant director (operations) Azizan Ismail said the explosion occurred at a Chili’s and McDonald’s restaurants about 10 am Tuesday.

“The explosion left eight people injured including two Mid-Valley maintenance contractors who were wounded on the face,” he told reporters, adding that both restaurants had been closed for investigations.

All the injured were sent to Pantai Hospital here, he added.

In the meantime, one of the Chili’s restaurant employee identified only as Malika, 53, said a portion of the ceiling in the kitchen collapsed as soon as the explosion occurred.

“The falling ceiling hit me on the head and I sustained minor injuries,” she said when met at the scene.

Meanwhile, the spokesman for the Mid Valley Megamall, IGB Real Estate Investment Trust (IGB REIT) said the shopping centre was operating as usual and open to visitors.

The investment manager of Mega Mall said the liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) system which caused the explosion has now been shut down until further notice.

“We are currently working with the relevant authorities,” the company said in a statement, here.

IGB Reit said, the injured were their maintenance staff, LPG contractor and tenant staff. There were no fatalities, neither were there any injuries to the public.

The company said safety remains their utmost priority.
