Ferry Under Repair Catches Fire In Langkawi

LANGKAWI, April 5 (Bernama) — A passenger ferry under repair caught fire in Langkawi today, making it the second in less than a month.
In the latest incident which occurred at about 10 am today, the ferry Coral Island 1 which was under repair at the Jeti Pelancongan, here was damaged in the middle deck and captain’s room after it caught fire.
Senior Fire and Rescue Officer Mohd Zabidi Che Teh, who led the fire-fighting operations, said no casualties were reported in the incident and 18 Fire and Rescue personnel took about 45 minutes to put out the fire.
“Our early investigations found that the fire started in the middle deck of the ferry before spreading to the captain’s room. The cause of the fire and amount of loss are still being investigated,” he said when met at the scene.
He confirmed that before the incident, another ferry caught fire while being repaired at Limbungan Boustead, Tanjung Lembong here on March 23.
Although no injuries were reported in both incidences, he hoped the relevant parties involved in the repairs would beef up fire safety measures especially in the current dry season so as to avoid a repeat of the incident.
