SINGAPORE – A blaze involving the contents of a coffee shop in Jurong West on Thursday (April 7) morning led to the evacuation of around 30 customers and residents.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was alerted to the fire in a coffee shop below Block 851, Jurong West Street 81, at around 10.40am.

It dispatched two fire engines, a red rhino, two fire bikes, a support vehicle and an ambulance.

SCDF personnel using two water jets extinguished the fire in 15 minutes, a SCDF spokesman said.

A video sent in by Straits Times reader Kenny Heng showed thick smoke rising from different parts of the block’s ground floor. A small crowd of people was also seen gathering at a nearby covered walkway as a fire engine arrived on the scene.

About 20 people had self-evacuated from the coffee shop, while SCDF and the Singapore Police Force evacuated 10 residents from the block’s upper floors as a precautionary measure.

There were no injuries reported, although three people complained of breathlessness.

“They were assessed by SCDF paramedics at the scene but refused to be taken to hospital,” the spokesman added.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
