Updated: 2016-03-30-04:08

Three cars and 14 two-wheelers were gutted in an early morning blaze at the parking lot of Shree Ganesh Park Society in Katraj on Tuesday.

Shubham Shinde, a resident of the society, said he was the first one to reach the parking area in the basement after hearing some blast-like noise around 2.25am. “When I reached the basement, I found that two vehicles were already on fire. I immediately raised an alarm,” Shinde said, adding that he was soon joined by another resident Vinay Bobade.

“Together, we managed to remove some vehicles from the parking area, but the fire was spreading fast,” he added.

Meanwhile, Hemant Shirke, who had shifted to the society just three days ago, also reached the spot. “When I reached the basement, it was filled with heavy smoke emanating from the raging fire. I sustained burns when I tried to shift my two-wheeler from the area,” he said.

Another resident Shreyas Bhate said his two-wheeler was completely damaged in the fire. “The entire three-storey building was engulfed by the heavy smoke in no time,” he added.

The residents said the electricity meters are far away from the spot where the fire broke out. “We suspect someone must have set the vehicles on fire deliberately,” they said, adding that three fire tenders arrived at the spot and doused the fire in around 30 minutes.

Assistant commissioner of police Milind Mohite of the Swargate division told TOI that the reason behind the fire is yet to be ascertained.”We are verifying the allegations and suspicions raised by the residents. Investigations are on,” he said.

The society has a watchman but he did not see anyone entering or leaving the society when the fire broke out.

In another incident, some unidentified persons set ablaze two cars parked in the parking lot of a building located in Chikhali on Tuesday morning.

The incident occurred around 2.30am in the parking area of Sai Park Society. “The suspects walked into the parking area and set two cars on fire before fleeing the spot,” the residents said.
Blaze destroys 11 four-wheelers

Clearing an open plot by setting dry leaves and grass on fire led to a huge inferno which destroyed as many as 11 four-wheelers, two two-wheelers and two three-wheelers near Sahakarnagar police station on Tuesday afternoon.

Senior police inspector S G Shinde of the Sahakarnagar police station said the police had kept the seized vehicles in the plot which were gutted in fire. “An unidentified man lit the leaves and grass that had grown on the open plot. The fire spread immediately and destroyed the vehicles,” he said.

Three held for torching car

A personal rivalry turned ugly when three men set their neighbour’s car on fire in Kusgaon near Lonavla, about 50km from here, early on Monday.

Madhukar Kadu, a building contractor, woke up around 2.30am and noticed flames on the premises of his house. He found that his car had been set ablaze. Suspecting his neighbours for the arson, he lodged a complaint against them with the Lonavla rural police.

Sub-inspector Shivaji Darekarsaid the three suspects, Shubham Gade, Kisan Gade and Mahendra Gade, were arrested on Tuesday. Prima facie investigations revealed that Kadu had a dispute with the trio.
