Updated: 2016-03-30-07:38
Cables and ring main units worth Rs 84 lakh were gutted in a fire at broke out in Vasna subdivision of Madhya Gujarat Vij Company Limited (MGVCL) on Tuesday afternoon.
According to fire brigade officials, the dry grass in the premises caught fire that later spread to the cables and ring main units. “The fire broke out at around 2pm when I was passing by the compound. Locals rushed to the spot to douse but the flames spread due to strong wind. We were worried as there were electric transformers next to the spot of incident,” said Usman Wadiwala, a local.
The fire was spotted by children who were playing near the compound. Although the fire led to thick smoke at the spot, it did not affect the residential areas adjacent to the compound. There were no injuries in the incident.
“We suspect that heat during the day led to the spontaneous ignition in the dry grass. Fortunately, the wind direction was away from the electric transformers. The fire could have led to blackout in the vicinity but thankfully it was doused,” said Manish Mod, fire officer .
Fire tenders from Wadiwadi, Dandiya Bazaar and GIDC Makarpura and 15 fire fighters took nearly two hours to douse the blaze and another hour to cool down wooden barrels and RMU cases.
“We are planning to have concrete flooring in the compound. The material kept here are meant for the Lalbaug division. Timely action prevented more damage,” said D H Chaudhary, superintending engineer, MGVCL’s Baroda city circle.
