Bus catches fire, close shave for passengers
Updated: 2016-04-02-08:06
Thirty passengers had a close shave when the bus they were travelling in caught fire near Chamunda under Jagannath Prasad police limits in Ganjam district on Friday. The incident took place around 9.30am.
“Fire tenders from Jagannath Prasad were rushed to the spot and it took them 30 minutes to douse the flames,” said SDPO (Bhanjanagar) R C Sethi.
Though the passengers managed to get out of the bus in time, their luggages were destroyed in the fire. The bus was on its way from Kotagarh in Kandhamal district to Bhubaneswar, police said.
“The fire started near the gearbox and engulfed the bus in no time. The driver immediately stopped the vehicle and we got off from the door. Some passengers panicked and jumped out of the windows,” said Ranjit Parida, a passenger.
Police suspect overheating of the engine or dry radiator might have led to short circuit and caused the fire.
