Early morning fire hits Labangon
Updated: 2016-04-03-00:00

At least P100,000 worth of properties were lost in a fire that broke out early morning yesterday along Katipunan St., Barangay Labangon, Cebu City.

Four houses were destroyed while two others, including an apartment, were damaged in the fire that was reported at 1:45 a.m., said Senior Fire Officer 3 Nick Ouano, investigator of Cebu City Fire Department. The fire, which was traced to an unattended appliance, was put out at 3:50 a.m.

“Electrical short circuit was the cause of fire,” said Ouano. The fire originated on the second floor of the house owned by the late Saturnino Dinopol which was being occupied by his granddaughter Leonila Dinopol.

Affected structures were mostly made of light materials. Ouano said it helped that the burning structures were located along the road so it was easy for the firemen to put out the fire and prevent it from spreading to other houses.

“We had no difficulty in penetrating since the fire scene was along the road,” he said, adding that the fire was raised only to the first alarm.

At least 27 families comprising some 250 individuals were affected by the fire, said Dr. Ester Concha, head of the city’s Department of Social Welfare and Services.

She said they will be handing over P10,000 cash to each family as assistance from the city government.

Concha said they coordinated with the city’s Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office for the transfer of the displaced families to Labangon Elementary School as temporary shelter.
