Minor fire lays bare fire department’s major shortcoming

A minor fire that broke out at a house in Deep Nagar, Civil Lines, laid bare the deteriorating condition of fire tenders in the city. Though the first engine reached the house within 15 minutes of the distress call being made by the occupants of the house, the water pump of the engine did not work and operations were postponed.
The second fire tender reached the spot 10 minutes later and it took the team another 40 minutes to douse the flames. The fire had broken out on the second floor of the house. An official of the fire department said they suspected that the fire was the result of sparking in a washing machine. The fire broke out at around 4 pm and nobody suffered any burns in the incident.
Meanwhile, when the second fire tender was on its way, residents were trying to douse the flames themselves by carrying water-filled buckets. Additional divisional fire officer Bhupinder Singh said termed the malfunction of the first fire tender as a “mechanical glitch” which was taken care of in short time.
