Fire hits 2 barangays in cities of Cebu, Talisay
Updated: 2016-04-08-00:00
At least 22 houses were destroyed in a fire that hit two neighboring barangays within the boundaries of Cebu City and Talisay City yesterday morning.
Senior Fire Officer 2 Sherwin Algoso of Talisay City Fire Department said they received the alarm at around 9:37 a.m. They declared the fire under control after 21 minutes.
Algoso said the fire started in the house of Estela Rontal, 39, when she left her cellphone charging.
Estela’s son, Aljun, 18, suffered bruises in his body after he jumped from the window when he woke up to the fire.
“Maayo gani kay nakamata ang anak ni Rontal mao to nga nilahos na siya ug ambak sa ilang bintana pero mao lagi napangus sab intawon. Dili gyud limtan ang unsang butang nga naka-plug diha sa atong mga outlet,” said Algoso.
The fire that hit Rontal’s residence in Sitio Laray, Barangay Inayawan, Cebu City spread to nearby houses already located in Laray, Barangay San Roque, Talisay City.
“It was the Cebu City Fire Station that responded to the incident because they believed it was within the jurisdiction of Cebu City,” he added.
Algoso said it was the first fire incident in Talisay City for the month of April.
Senior Fire Officer 4 Ricardo Villarente of the Cebu City Fire Station said they had a problem responding to the fire due to the narrow road in the area. He said when they arrived, the fire already spread to several houses and stores.
Estela, who was emotional when interviewed, said she was just outside their house while she left her cellphone charging. Her daughter, Chabil, 16, was reportedly washing clothes when she heard something explode. The explosion was immediately followed by a fire.
Ela Jane Quimada, 18, who was watching the fire nearby, was hit by a G.I sheet from one of the burning houses. Quimada sustained a laceration to her right foot.
She was brought to the nearest hospital for medical treatment.
Damage of the fire is estimated at P100,000.
