A major fire broke out in a plastic company owned by the family of G D Naidu on Avinashi Road on Friday. Property worth lakhs of rupees was gutted in the fire. While officials said 10 employees were present at the godown when the fire broke out, company representatives confirmed that no one was injured.
The employees attempted to put off the flames, but the fire spread and soon the entire locality was engulfed by thick smoke creating panic among the public.
Around 10.30 am, the fire broke out and soon thick smoke could be seen billowing out. The company representatives informed the fire department and the police officials at 11 am.
About 10 fire tenders including two Vajra vehicles of the city police reached the spot and doused the fire within 30 minutes. The police vehicles entered the PRS grounds and broke down the compound wall as well to douse the fire from the other side of the building. Since, the company was located close to a petrol bunk, there was panic across the city.
The godown belonged to GD Plast private limited Unit II – managed by GD Rajkumar. Officials suspect that the fire must have started when the labourers were moulding the plastic raw material. Officials, however, did not rule out electrical short circuit as well. The fire soon spread to the 3,600sqft godown.
“There are no casualties as we have a full proof fire system with alarms. All the employees ran out and no one was injured,” said Sri Ram, manager, human resources of the company. The employees managed to bring out some goods outside quickly.
As per police officials, there are over 1,000 employees working in the entire Gopal Bagh building where there are other companies functioning as well. In that particular godown only 10 employees were present at the time of the fire.
The company had stored plastic fittings that they supply to automobile, household and sanitary industries in the godown, most of which were destroyed in the fire.
