Fire hits Fabella; hundreds evacuated
Updated: 2016-04-09-00:00
Hundreds of patients, including 66 newborns, were evacuated from the Dr. Jose Fabella Memorial Hospital in Manila when a fire broke out at one of its elevators Thursday night.
The blaze started at the second floor at around 11:23 p.m. and smoke from the elevator spread throughout the building, Fire Officer 1 Freddie Ibasco said.
Hospital employees evacuated 66 infants from the Newborn Intensive Care Unit and brought them to the Department of Pediatrics building. Their mothers stayed at the mothers’ ward.
Other patients and employees from the first to third floors were also evacuated.
Senior Fire Officer 2 Edilberto Cruz said the fire reached first alarm and was put out before midnight.
He said firefighters used “large fans” to prevent smoke from spreading to other areas of the hospital.
Cruz said the cause of the fire is still under investigation, but probers may focus on the elevator’s faulty wiring.
Hospital officials have yet to issue a statement on the incident.
