Fire razes 42 houses
Updated: 2016-04-09-00:00
A mid-day fire either destroyed or damaged 42 houses in Barangay 36 of this city Thursday, leaving 44 families or 191 individuals homeless.
No one was injured but at least 30 pigs were trapped and died. The area hit by fire is called Purok Litsonan, as the livelihood of most of the residents was roasting pig (lechon).
A total of 39 houses were destroyed and three were damaged, records of the Department of Social Services and Development showed.
Consuelo Yaun, social welfare officer IV assigned at Barangay 36, said 19 are now temporarily staying at the Rizal Elementary School while the rest already went back to the site.
Superintendent Rodolfo Denaga, city fire marshal, said the fire started at 11:12 a.m. from the house of Angelita Cari単o, who said that she was doing laundry outside her house when it happened.
Denaga said the fire quickly spread as the adjacent houses were made of light materials. The affected families were informal settlers living near a creek at Purok Litsonan.
The blaze was put under control at about 12:08 p.m., and left an estimated damage of P800,000.
Denaga said they are still conducting further investigation to determine the cause of fire.
