8 hurt in Sta. Cruz fire
Updated: 2016-04-10-00:00
Eight people were hurt and P5 million worth of property was damaged after a fire gutted a two-story apartment building and a five-story residential-commercial building in Sta. Cruz, Manila yesterday morning.
The fire started at the second floor of the residential-commercial building, owned by Joseph Tam and occupied by Virgo Marketing, on Tomas Mapua Street at past 9 a.m.
The fire reached fifth alarm before it was put out around four hours later.
The Bureau of Fire Protection-Manila declined to name the eight injured, who suffered from bruises and slight burns.
The mostly wooden 50-year-old apartment building, which had 10 rooms occupied by about 30 families, was razed to the ground.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
However, Abigail Tecson, one of the victims, said the fire may have started from a stockroom where leftover wood was stored. “I smelled burning plastic,” she said.
She added the occupants had no idea there was a fire nearby until they smelled smoke.
She said the apartment building used to be a furniture shop owned by a Chinese businessman.
She also told The STAR the entire building was sold by its owner to cover millions of pesos in debt to the buyer.
