SIBU, April 15 (Bernama) – A total 134 occupants of Rumah Saba at the Sekuau Resettlement Scheme in Selangau, about 44 kilometres from here, were left only with the clothes on their back when a fire destroyed their longhouse today.
Sibu Zone Fire and Rescue senior superintendent Mutalib Rashid said the victims were from 23 families and there was no report of anyone injured in the incident.
He said 10 firemen from the Sungai Merah Fire and Rescue station rushed to the scene after receiving a distress call at 7.48 am, and arriving there at 8.35 am.
They were assisted by seven firemen from the Sibu Fire and Rescue station, he said, adding that the fire-fighting operation was completed at 1.45 pm.
Mutalib said the department was investigating the cause of the fire and losses incurred.
Meanwhile, Sibu Welfare officer Ali Taha Ayang, when contacted by Bernama, said the fire victims had been provided temporary accommodation at the Sekuau Community Hall.
