Fire At Egg Tray-making Factory Causes RM1-million Loss

NIBONG TEBAL, April 17 (Bernama) — Fire destroyed a section of a factory producing egg trays in Jalan Dato Keramat here today, causing loss estimated at over RM1 million.

Penang Fire and Rescue Department senior operations commander Nafis Ariff Abdullah said no one was injured in the fire which occurred at about 10am as the workers fled the building quickly.

Five fire trucks with 27 firemen and officers as well as four volunteer fire-fighting teams rushed to the scene.

“On arrival, we found that the fire had razed a section of the 5,000 sq metre factory. We took about an hour to bring the fire under control. Even as late as 1pm, firemen were putting out the fire inside the building,” he said.

The cause of the fire and the damage had yet to be ascertained, he added.

The thick smoke from the fire was visible kilometres away, said Nafis Ariff.

Meanwhile, in another incident, Penang Fire and Rescue Department operations commander Azmah Laille Abdul Aziz said a spillage of hydrocloric acid occurred at a factory in Jalan Bukit Gedung, Bayan Lepas, at 6.25am today.

Firemen found a leak in the piping system and switched off the valve, he (rpt) he said, adding that the Hazmat (Hazardous Materials Unit) team carried out the clean-up operation.

“No one was injured in the incident,” he said.
