Fire destroys 150 huts in village near Ganga barrage
Updated: 2016-04-12-06:10

A fire broke out at Kallupurwa Shankpur Sarai village near Ganga barrage on Monday morning in which 150 huts were reduced to ashes and five goats also died. Four two-wheelers and property worth lakhs of rupees were destroyed. The intensity of the fire could be gauged from the fact that 30 feet tall eucalyptus trees were also charred.

The houses were made of mud and had thatched roofs. The flames spread rapidly and engulfed everything, including household items. The villagers were a disappointed lot as despite being situated next to Ganga they did not have much water.

The fire broke out at around 7 am when most of the people were working in fields. Dozens of fire tenders were rushed to the spot to bring the situation under control. It took four hours for firemen to douse the flames. The reason of the fire is not known.

Only ‘pucca’ houses were safe and villagers had taken refuge there. “Around 7 am, fire broke out in the village. We saw it from the field and ran to save our belongings but the fire engulfed the entire village,” Buddhi Lal, who lost his hut, said. It was impossible for us to go inside and save our money and other valuables, he added. As many as 15 fire tenders were pressed into service from Colonelganj fire stations. The villagers helped the firemen in fighting the flames.
