With death of two more kids, toll in fire incident in a house at Jinsi rose to four on Wednesday, up from two a day earlier. All four children were playing in a room on a third floor of the house when the fire broke out.
Death of four children from an extended family sent shock waves in the area. Deaths due to suffocation appears the likely cause.
The kids, all below five, could not move out of the room. When family members saw smoke coming out of the room they broke open the door of the room and found them unconscious.
All four were rushed to hospital where they succumbed one after another. Exact cause of fire could not be ascertained. Grieving family members said short-circuit on an electric board was the trigger, but the police suspect the fire began from a stove in the room.
The room where the incident took place is used as kitchen. Besides, other household goods are kept there, sources said. Jehangirabad police said the cause of fire is being looked into.
Four children, who succumbed, were Sanad, Manza, Adiba, Anaiza. The house where the incident took place belongs to a carpenter, Naeem Khan. Of the four Adiba and Anaiza were Naeem’s daughters. Two other children, Sanad and Manza, were kids of his two sisters.
Naeem’s sisters Amreen and Farah came to his house on April 11. Sanad was Amreen’s son and Manza was Farah’s daughter.
Police said Naeem’s wife Nazia cooked food in evening and went for a bath. All four kids were playing in the room that time. The fire intensified and they could not move out of the house, located in a crammed bylane close to Jinsi police outpost.
The family members on second and ground floor of the house rushed them to hospital where Anaiza died and within hours Adiba, Manza and Sanad succumbed.
Sanad breathed last at 4 am on Wednesday. Sanad’s father Sajid, a resident of Categorised Market, said his wife came at her parents place for two days, but the incident took place and he lost his son.
Naeem’s uncle Mohammad Zafar said the fire was due to short-circuit. Kids in room got scared and could not move out, which resulted in the incident.
Bodies were handed over to family after completing formalities. Investigations are on.
