Updated: 2016-04-14-21:12

At least 30-40 huts and cemented houses were burnt in a massive fire and a dozen cattle charred to death at a village located in Baloda Bazaar district on Thursday noon. The incident took place at Saloni village of Palari region around 1 pm.

While the situation wasn’t clear till late evening as the team of fire brigade, collector and police were still on the spot trying to get control over the situation, Palari police station in-charge RG Soni said that though the situation was under control, exact assessment of loss was yet to be done as fire was still spreading at few patches.

Soni said that it was at noon when a bamboo tree possibly caught fire and due to hot winds blowing strongly in the region it took minutes for fire to spread across the village.

While the village is thickly populated with 2500-3000 people, there was no loss of life or injury as per preliminary reports but nearly a dozen cattle and few motor vehicles were charred in the incident, Soni said.

About six fire tenders were sent from Baloda Bazaar headquarters to douse the fire which is about 25 kilometers from the spot.

Amid reports of nearly 60 houses burnt, police confirmed only 35. Police said that arrangements for food and shelter were being made for affected people at the local schools and aanganwadi centres.
