Woman critically burnt, husband detained in Dhaka’s Mirpur

Police have detained a man after his wife was admitted to a hospital with severe burn injuries.
Shahana Akter, 29, was brought to Dhaka Medical College Hospital’s (DMCH) burns unit from Mirpur’s Pallabi on Friday.
Her husband Md Rony claimed to police that she had sustained injuries in a fire caused by gas leak. Later, he changed his statement and claimed she ‘tried to commit suicide.’
Pallabi Police OC Dadon Fakir told bdnews24.com that police would question Rony to find out ‘what really happened and if any murder was attempted’.
Quoting Rony, DMCH Police Outpost Inspector Mozammel Haque had earlier said a fire broke out at an apartment in Block D of Mirpur Section 12 on Friday afternoon.
Apparently there was a gas leak in the kitchen, he added.
“The entire kitchen was on fire when Shahana tried to light the stove. Rony was also injured while trying to save her,” he had said.
Rony claimed to have rescued his wife and took her to hospital. Doctors said 50 percent of her body had been burnt.
“Shahana’s parents and a sister were at the hospital. They have also said it was an accident,” the inspector stated earlier.
But the Pallabi OC said, “I went to that house. There was no evidence of gas leak in the kitchen. I found a bottle of Kerosene on the spot.”
Inspector Haque said Rony changed his statement after police found no evidence of fire caused by gas.
“He is now claiming that Shahana tried to commit suicide over a family feud. But since he was afraid he tried to pass it off as an accident,” Haque said.
Rony told a TV station that he had a tiff with Shahana over shopping of groceries.
Shahana ‘poured kerosene on her body’ and ‘set herself on fire’.
