10 Hectares Of Peat Soil Forest On Fire Near Pekan

KUANTAN, April 23 (Bernama) — A 10-hectare peat soil forest in Kampung Selingkong, Nenasi near Pekan has been on fire since April 19.
Nenasi Fire and Rescue Station chief Senior Fire Officer I Mohd Fadzirllah Zainal Abidin said the fire might have been likely caused by open burning activities and throwing of cigarette butts.
“We received a report on the fire from a worker of a nearby oil palm estate,” he told Bernama today.
When asked whether extreme hot weather was the probable cause of the fire, Mohd Fadzirllah said based on his assessment, it was unlikely as the El Nino phenomenon only contributed to less than 10 per cent (of open fires).
He said the fire spread to a nearby oil palm estate but was not badly affected.
He said as of yesterday, his men had managed to douse six hectares.
