Chauri Chaura Exp engine catches fire

Timely intervention of the driver averted a major tragedy when the engine of Chauri Chaura Express caught fire on Shujatpur-Sirathu section of the busy New Delhi-Howrah route on Tuesday. Movement of several trains was also affected due to the incident.
When the train, from Gorakhpur to Kanpur Anwarganj, crossed Shujatpur station on way to Sirathu, the driver noticed smoke coming out of rear portion of the engine at about 9:56 am.
He applied brakes and informed the control room, asking for fire tenders to be sent. The electric supply to OHE (Over Head Equipment) was stopped.
In the meantime, the driver, along with other railway staff, used fire extinguishers to douse the flames coming from the engine. The engine was also separated from the train to prevent the fire from spreading to coaches.
Fire tenders reached the spot to control the fire. The fire was doused by 11:34 am. Electric supply to OHE was restored and movement of the train on the down line was started at about 11:40 am. However, movement of the trains in the up line going towards New Delhi was restored at about 12:40 pm.
Several trains, including Kalka Mail, Moorie Express, Nandan Kanan Express and North East Express were halted in Allahabad-Shujatpur section due to the incident.
Talking to TOI, chief public relations officer of NCR Bijay Kumar said, “An inquiry panel has been set up which will comprise mechanical, safety and operational departments officers. The cause of the fire can be ascertained once the report of the inquiry comes.”
