As many as 32 passengers of a private airconditioned bus escaped unhurt when the vehicle caught fire near Ambur in Tamil Nadu in the early hours of Thursday.
The accident happened on the Chennai-Bengaluru National Highway around 3.30am. The bus was going to Bengaluru from Chennai.
Driver of the bus E Ravi noticed the reflection of the fire on the side mirror and stopped the vehicle. He found that one of the rear tyres had caught fire. He alerted the passengers, who were sleeping. The passengers got down from the bus.
A group of passengers and the driver sought the help of locals and tried to put off the fire. They brought a few buckets of water from nearby houses and tried to extinguish the fire, which spread to the rear side of the bus.
Meanwhile, passengers alerted the local police and the fire service and rescue station in Ambur. A six-member team from the fire and rescue station rushed to the spot and doused the fire.
Two of the rear tyres, side glass and a couple of seats were gutted.
