Fire guts foam factory, 8 tenders pressed into service
Updated: 2016-04-21-22:06
A massive fire broke out at a foam factory on Bhola Road in Meerut on Thursday morning. As many as eight fire tenders were pressed into service and it took more than four hours to douse the leaping flames. The fire was reported at Vaam Foam Pvt. Ltd., which was gutted. The police are trying to ascertain the losses though no casualties have been reported.
Giving details, Mukesh Kumar, fire station officer, Mawana area, said, “We received information that a fire had broken out around 10:25am on Thursday. We reached the spot with as many as eight fire tenders but it took time to control the fire as foam catches fire easily, thereby making it difficult to douse it.”
While the reason of the fire is yet to be ascertained, preliminary investigations revealed that it may have been caused due to a short circuit in the factory.
“Foam is such a material that air gets trapped inside it, thereby making it flammable. Also, latex and other materials used to stick foam together have chemicals in it, which makes it easy for the fire to spread quickly. It took us over four hours to douse the flames, which gutted the factory,” said Kumar.
Fire tenders from Partapur, Ghantaghar and police lines had to be rushed to the spot as it was a massive fire, which could not be controlled by two tenders. “Workers were inside the factory when the fire broke out, but the moment they saw black smoke emanating from the premises, they rushed out and called up the fire department,” said Jai Prakash, an eyewitness.
