Fire kills 8-year-old trying to save dog

An eight-year-old girl was trapped and killed inside their burning house when she attempted to rescue her dog past 11 p.m. Tuesday in Barangay Don Andres Soriano, Toledo City.
Richel Jane Laborte’s charred body was later found inside the burnt house where she was living with her grandparents. Laborte’s mother is already dead while her father is reportedly in prison.
In an interview, Senior Fire Officer 3 Leonardo Clarido, Toledo City Fire Station investigator, said the residents of the house were all sleeping and it was Laborte’s cousin, Marvin Del Rosario, 13, who woke up to the fire.
Marvin woke up Laborte and her younger brother, Riel Klyle, 6, and told them to get out of the burning house.
Clarido said that Laborte was on her way out of the house but heard her Chihuahua barking inside, prompting her to go back to rescue the dog.
Both Laborte and the dog never make it out of the house alive and the child’s body was discovered by responding fire fighters past 2 a.m. already.
Clarido said that past 9 p.m., Laborte’s uncle, Marvin Sarno, burned a rubber wheel outside the house and left it unattended as they went to sleep.
The house caught fire past 11 p.m. and distant neighbors called for help from the local fire station. Balamban Fire Station personnel also responded to the alarm.
Clarido said only the house where Laborte was living was destroyed since the other houses in the area are far from each other.
Clarido placed the damage at P20,000 since the house is only made of light materials.
