Fire hits Khlong Yai garbage dump site
Updated: 2016-04-24-09:31
A fire broke out in a pile of 600,000 tonnes of garbage awaiting disposal near Pailin beach in Khlong Yai district of this eastern province on Saturday night.
Surasak Intaraprasert, chairman of the Mai Rut tambon administration organisation (TAO), said he was called out to the garbage pile shortly after 8pm after fire was reported.
He found the 300-metre-long garbage pile near Pailin beach in flames, with thick smoke and a foul smell being reported more than two kilometres away. Most of the trash was old shoes, materials made of rubber and plastic bags.
Three fire engines were called in from Khlong Yai Municipality, Khlong Yai TAO and Mai Rut TAO to contain the fire.
Combustion was initially believed to be the cause of the fire.
Mr Surasak said this was the fifth fire to have occurred at the dump site where garbage has piled up pending disposal.
The fire was still burning early Sunday morning.
