Updated: 2016-04-25-09:33

At least 10 people were charred to death and more than 1,500 houses were gutted across the state on Sunday in various incidents of fire reported from Saran, Darbhanga, Lakhisarai, Begusarai, Vaishali, Samastipur, Muzaffarpur and East Champaran districts.

In Saran, three people included a three-year-old girl died in two separate incidents of fire at Bhawani Chhapra and Banwari Basant villages under Sripal Basant panchayat. Garkha circle officer Ashwani Kumar Chaubey said the deceased were Lagan Sah (60), Jalashree Kunwar (70) and a child Raushan Kumari. Over 6,000 houses have been also reduced to ashes, added the CO.

Four children were brunt alive in a fire that broke out in Pokhrama village under Kajra police station in Lakhisarai district. Kajra police station SHO Sanjeet Kumar said all these children were below 10 years and were unable to escape when engulfed their house.

About three dozen houses were also engulfed in a devastating fire at Bagaha in East Champaran in two separate incidents. A six-year- old child Balkishun Rai died in Sunday’s fire that broke out at Pakari Harijan Toli of Khataura panchayat under Ramnagar police station. Half-a-dozen livestock was also burnt alive.

In Darbhanga, 400 houses in about two dozen villages spread over three blocks- Hanumannagar, Jale, Biraul blocks and Benipur sub divisional town- were gutted resulting into huge loss of property. About 300 houses were gutted in eight adjoining villages of Hanumannagar block itself. However, there was no loss of life, said RK Divakar, in charge, disaster management cell.

Over 200 houses were reduced to ashes in Muzaffarpur, damaging huge property including foodgrains in Saraiya, Mushahari and Sahebganj block areas. The situation is critical in Saraiya block where panchayat election was going on. Fire broke out in three villages simultaneously but the extent of damage in Bahilwara and Chak-Ibrahim villages was colossal. As DM Dharmendra Singh was himself present at Saraiya block area because of the polling, the fire was controlled within a couple hours with the help of fire tenders pressed into service. Fire also broke out in Khabra, Gobarsahi and Dhiranpatti villages under Mushahari block in the district. Fire tenders could not reach the affected villages on time.

Two persons lost their lives when an LPG cylinder exploded in Sahebganj block area the same day. The incident also resulted in fire which burnt a couple of adjacent houses.

Villagers lamented that there is no water in any of the ponds due to lack of rainfall during the last seven months and this has posed a major challenge in controlling fire. Water level of the town area too has gone down and the residents have to use their water pumps during wee hours to take out water for daily use.

At Bhawapur in Vaishali district, several houses were engulfed in flames causing huge damage to property. Fire incidents were also reported from Begusarai district were more 500 houses were gutted in a huge fire as fire tenders were not able to reach the affected area.
