2 cars gutted in fire incident near Motor Market
Updated: 2016-04-27-00:14

Panic spread when a major fire broke out near the Motor Market in Sector 48 here on Tuesday at around 2pm. Two cars given for repairs were gutted in the incident, which triggered panic among motor mechanics, who had parked the cars of their customers in a secluded area full of tall, dry grass. They rushed and immediately removed 23 other cars from the spot. Eyewitnesses said the two 2004 model cars were parked in front and that is why they caught fire first. They maintained that someone lit a fire in the dry grass that spread rapidly, which was later controlled by two fire brigade tenders. Fire and police officials have ruled out any foul play, maintaining that it was an accident.

Baljeet Singh, a motor mechanic, said owners of both the cars were informed about the incident. The cars had come to him for repairs a month-and-a-half ago. He maintained that their engines stopped when the incident took place. Fire brigade officials said fire incidents have increased in the past one week. Meanwhile, another fire broke out in the forest area of Sector 56, but no loss of life was reported. Fire officials requested motor mechanics not to park the cars of their customers in open grounds of dry grass. They also requested the general public to park their vehicles under sheds and trees, and even use protection from sunrays for their cars.
