Massive fire continues to rage in Visakhapatnam
Updated: 2016-04-27-14:34

The fire that broke out in a bio-diesel plant at Duvvada here continues to rage on Wednesday. Fire-fighting officials have been battling for more than 17 hours to tame the flames.

The massive fire erupted in a bio-diesel manufacturing company – Biomax Fuels Limited in Visakhapatnam SEZ – on Tuesday night. The Navy has also joined the fire-fighting operation.

Luckily, no causalities were reported so far. The storage tanks are located far away from the main factory, and this has averted what could have been a major tragedy.

The fire mishap occurred at around 7.15 pm on Tuesday due to alleged short circuit at the diesel storage tanks. Of the 18 storage tanks (each has a capacity of around 2500 tonnes) 12 tanks were gutted. Around 40 fire tenders were pressed into action to douse the fire, using water and foam, district collector N Yuvaraj said. He hoped that the fire would be doused by evening.

Biomax company assistant general manager Srinivas told media that short circuit was the cause of the fire mishap. He said the company had suffered loss of about Rs. 100 crore as perpreliminary estimates. The Pollution Control Board (PCB) officials had collected samples from the accident spot. It is also estimating the pollution level in the air. Deputy chief minister N Chinna Rajappa and district minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao are monitoring the salvage operations.
